A. List is too long! Bottomline: make indie movies for fun, not profit. Every year there is one My Big Fat GreeK Wedding that creates the hope of making a bundle, but most never get close to break-even.

A. I agree with greg. But part of past mistakes of many independent financiers is that for years they invested in production, but had no distribution secured. The idea was they would make the film, pre-sell foreign rights, but wait to sell the film at a festival to a distributor. With the massive amount of indie films being made now, in part due to digital video being so accessible, there is not as much room in the market for films that show at festivals, even then ones that do well with festival awards and critics, to get distribution. So now it is more common for investors want to put money into projects only if domestic theatrical and dvd distribution secured. It is still a big risk but at least you know the film will get the opportunity to be seen by the public. And if the distribution is “in-house,” as it is with many new film funds, the likelihood of profits is increased because the investor has a piece of the distribution fee.
